Finding My Dream Home – Help Me Help You
If you’ve been following my journey through the home buying process then you know we have found our dream home. Now it’s time to put an offer in. That means paperwork. Luckily, we didn’t really have to fill much paperwork out, we just had to read it over and sign it.
When we decided to make an offer on the 1970′s bi-level we wanted, it was Thursday evening at around 6 or 7 pm. We had just finished looking at a few more houses and Chris had already dropped us off and headed home.
Levi and I talked about it and we decided that we’d better put an offer on the house now, because the following Sunday was an Open House. I am not sure why we were so afraid of that Open House now that I look back. I guess we figured that if we could see what a great house this was and what a decent price it was being listed at that everyone else who set foot in the house would see the same thing.
Why the rush in preparing the offer late Thursday night? Well, Levi and I were heading on a little holiday to Vancouver for the weekend. We had tickets to a show and it was a celebratory weekend for Levi completing all 4 years of his Plumbing apprenticeship and passing his Journeyman’s exam. (Yay Levi!) We wanted to have our offer in before we left – early Friday morning.
So, like the rockstar agent that he is, Chris prepared the offer that evening, at home, and emailed it to us. Then over the phone he walked us through the important details and told us exactly where to sign. By the time everything was said and done and the last signature was put to paper it was nearing midnight. Talk about dedicated service! All we had to do was drop off the signed offer in an envelope at the real estate office on our way out of town the next morning.
Then the waiting began.
I hardly slept at all on Thursday night. We left bright and early Friday morning for Vancouver. The entire way down we were thinking about the offer. Did they accept it? What will they counter-offer with? What if they don’t agree to our conditions?

Just as we were entering the outskirts of the Greater Vancouver Area we got the call. As expected they came back with a counter-offer, quoting a price a bit higher than what we originally offered as well as changing the closing date to a month sooner. We considered their counter-offer and with Chris’ advice we re-countered with a different number and agreed to the change of closing date.
The waiting was the hardest part. But before we even arrived in downtown Vancouver we had our answer. They accepted our second offer! At our hotel, we were able to sign the appropriate documents and get them faxed back to our Realtor.
Even though the trip to Vancouver was meant to celebrate Levi’s achievements, it was also a small celebration for both of us and the fact that we basically just bought a house. The show was good too, but we were both so preoccupied with thinking about the house, that I don’t even remember much of it.
We headed home and were ready to move on with the process of buying of our house like getting the inspections done, finalizing financing, and then packing. One step closer to getting a dog!
Stay tuned.
