Earth Day, Not Just About Hotdogs Anymore
Today, April 22nd, is Earth Day. Today marks the 40th anniversary of the very first Earth Day.
Earth Day was established as a special day to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment since 1970. However with the overall awareness of the ‘green’ movement in recent years, Earth Day seems to have become a way for people to jumpstart their own eco-friendly efforts.
My first memory of Earth Day being a big deal (to me, anyway) was when I was in Grade 6. Our way of showing support for making our planet ‘green’ again was to make our own solar-powered hotdog rotisserie. Some cardboard, aluminum foil, and an old wire coat hanger and we were saving the Earth. We were geniuses.
I confess I haven’t done something quite as spectacular as building a solar-powered ’anything’ in the (many) years since Grade 6 to show true support for Earth Day. But in recent years with all the talk about green-this and green-that, it’s hard to miss the importance of smart, green thinking not only just for one day a year but the other 364 days as well. We all probably make steps towards reducing our ‘footprint’ and impact on the environment such as recycling, reducing the amount of energy and water we consume and waste, etc. Probably a lot of us, myself included, could do a bit more in this regard. Earth Day is a good reminder for this. We all have to start somewhere and Earth Day can give us a bit of a jumpstart in the right direction.
Some of our staff choose to use Earth Day to give a little back to the environment and the community by collecting garbage on roadsides and by the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. Some use Earth Day to help educate others about recycling, reusing, and how to put ‘green’ ideas to good use. For most of us, Earth Day is just one day in the whole year of making smart choices and taking our impact on the environment into consideration in our daily lives.
So tell us, what are you doing for Earth Day?

Great post Megan! I remember cooking pies in solar ovens a long long time ago, and they were about the worst pies ever. But I’m definitely glad we didn’t try it with meat
