The New Prefab Home – Not So Drab Anymore

I’ve posted before about alternative living spaces – homes made from shipping containers and grain silos, to name a couple. This topic continues to intrigue me.
I meant to write this a while ago after coming across a video clip about the new prefabricated homes on display at the Museum of Modern Art. But, as usual, I got sidetracked. This clip is a couple weeks old, but it’s still current and I’m still curious about it.

So what if you could pick out your dream home right out of a catalogue? Could you see yourself purchasing your first or next home from a new homes catalogue, just like you’d pick out your next piece of Klappsta furniture from IKEA?
Prefabricated homes often come with the stigma that they’re cheap and fudged together. That may have been the case in the past, but judging by what they have on display at MoMA and everywhere on the web, prefab homes have come a long way!
They may not sport the conventional design and construction that we’re all used to, but in some cases it’s clear that they’ve got a leg up on some of the older pre-owned homes for sale that are falling apart and in need of repair.
Do you think it’s possible that prefabricated homes could become the next wave in affordable real estate? As a REALTOR®, how would you change public perception and market a previously-owned, made-to-order prefabricated home?

I just sold one of two pre-fab homes. Really, for the money, a very nice home. The video on how they are made is fun. A truck drives up, they unload a stack of “panels” onto a slab, and in a day, the basic house is put together. Look up “SIPS” houses.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing Travis! I’ll be checking these out for sure.
